But scaling GenAI is not the same as expanding access.

An employee who cannot tell whether a document contains sensitive information is not ready to use GenAI safely on that document. A manager who encourages experimentation without review expectations may unintentionally create more cleanup work downstream.

Practice Builds Judgment
High-stakes work is the wrong place to learn these habits for the first time.
Teams need structured, low-risk scenarios where they can practice with safe sample inputs, see common failure modes, and learn what good looks like. They need to experience how a vague request creates a vague answer, how a polished draft can still contain unsupported claims, and how a summary can omit the risks that matter most.
Practice also makes the work more concrete. A team may understand in theory that review matters. It becomes more useful when they work through a draft, identify hallucinated content, adjust tone for the audience, and decide what must be checked before sharing. A team may know that data handling matters. It becomes more actionable when they practice removing sensitive details, using approved inputs, and recognizing when a workflow should not be handled casually.
The point is not to script every future use case. It is to build judgment that transfers. Once people have practiced the basics in low-risk scenarios, they are better prepared to apply the same habits in the work they do every day.
What Good Looks Like Before Scale
Before GenAI use expands organization-wide, leaders should be able to see a few practical signs of readiness.
Teams should have a common way to describe where GenAI fits in the workflow. They should know whether they are using it to plan, outline, draft, summarize, compare, review, or prepare a recommendation. They should understand the human decision or handoff that comes after the output.
They should also have clear prompting habits. Good use starts with the task, context, constraints, source material, audience, and output standard. It does not start with a collection of clever phrases.
Review should be normal, not exceptional. Teams should expect to check accuracy, completeness, source support, tone, and audience fit before sharing output with stakeholders. They should know when to revise, when to escalate, and when not to use the output at all.
Finally, data handling should be explicit. Employees should know what information can be used, what should be excluded, and where policy or manager guidance is required. The organization should not depend on guesswork for sensitive business information.
